REFUGE REVIEW

    Written and published by the

Spruce Cove Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre

  October 2007

What an incredibly busy summer we had at the Centre.  We are a bit late sending our newsletter as we have been busy rehabbing and fundraising

        News update

Our fundraising programs have been an ongoing success. We are currently preparing for the Fall/Winter fundraising events. We would like to thank Cathy Acker, and her dedicated team of Fundraisers, for helping us (Team Cathy and The Snowshoe Hares). Cathy organised our first giant yard sale at the Big Ex in Bridgewater. It was a great success. We will have another one next year. If you have items, we would definitely appreciate if you set them aside for next year.

We would like to thank Halifax Chapter of The TD Friends of The Environment for donating $430.00 toward the building of an outside enclosed mother and baby raccoon pen. We were able to complete the pen.  A mom and her two babies stayed and were released together when her kids were old enough.

The Municipality of Chester gave a donation of $300.00 which is much appreciated as it was used for Veterinary bills and health supplies. The St. Margaret’s Bay Animal Hospital donated $1000.00. We appreciate the Veterinary Clinic’s wonderful support. We also received the following generous donations: Coastal Cruisers: $ 500.00, GN Plastics: $100.00, and Louisiana-Pacific Canada Ltd: $250.00.

The St. Margaret’s Bay Animal Hospital donated all of the vaccines for our raccoons, which is wonderful because vaccines are very expensive and we have so many raccoons to vaccinate.

Animal Roll Call

SONG BIRDS:  We have had a wide variety of orphan song birds that have come to the centre. Some of these included: Finches, Song Sparrows, American Robins, Mourning Doves, Swallows, Grackles…..and so on

AMERICAN BITTERN:  This pretty bird came from the Crescent Beach area.  It had an injured leg and was starving. After leg rehabilitation and fattened up, he was released.

OPHAN DUCKS:  We received a few orphan ducks this year which were raised until they could fly and then released.

RACCOONS: We had many orphan raccoons again this year. They did very well and were all vaccinated, dewormed, and released where they would not be a nuisance.

CORN SNAKE: Not a native to Nova Scotia. He was run over by cars but was ok. We found him a home.

MERLIN: This bird of prey was orphaned. We raised him; made sure he could hunt and he was released in a wildlife preservation area

We also received a number of other types animals and birds that included: squirrels, gulls, porcupines, skunks …..etc.

We hope you enjoyed this issue and appreciate your support.  Check out our website: wildforwildlife.org

                                         2005 Review

Hello!!. We hope you had a nice winter.  It is great to see all of the snow melting away.

NEWS UPDATE

As this is our annual picture newsletter, we thought we would highlight some of our wonderful wildlife friends that spent time at the centre in 2005. Before that though, we would like to thank the following Benefactors and Donors of Supplies for making 2005 so successful:

St. Margaret’s Bay Animal Hospital - $500.00   Municipality of Chester - $300.00   Chester Basin Animal Hospital - $220.00   Louisiana Pacific Canada Ltd - $250.00    Kaizer Meadow Preservation Group - $250.00  Friends of Nature Conservation Society - $250.00  Claussen Walters and Associates - $200.00 Coastal Cruisers - $150.00 and G.N. Plastics Co. - $100.00

A special welcome goes out to our new and returning members.  Every year new members are being added to our membership list.  It is wonderful to see how many people love wildlife.

We would like to thank Claussen Walters and Associates for sponsoring Spruce Cove’s attendance at the Canadian Oiled Wildlife Rescue Academy. The Canadian arm of Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research Inc. (TSBRR), a private, non-profit organization dedicated to oil-spill management and wildlife rehabilitation, is proud to announce a new three-year partnership with Dawn dishwashing liquid to create the Canadian Oiled Wildlife Rescue Academy. Attendees learn the appropriate response to an oil-spill and how to rehabilitate the affected oiled-wildlife.  The session also provides insight into oil-spill management and the roles that each stakeholder will play, in the event of a spill.
